Frequently Asked Questions

As stated by the Manitoba Chiropractic Association on their website, manitobachiropractors.ca, "Chiropractors specialize in diagnosing conditions that affect the spine. By performing spinal adjustments, they relieve pain, restore movement, and help you prevent recurring injuries. Adjustments are a drug free, non-invasive treatment that can restore proper alignment and motion to your spine, allowing your nervous system to function optimally. Many conditions can be traced back to nerve and spine dysfunction, and adjustments are a drug-free, non-invasive solution in these cases.  Chiropractors work with all joints, muscles and nerves. They address the root cause of pain and dysfunction - not just the symptoms.

Chiropractic care has been proven to help many conditions including but not limited to:Headaches, migraines, neck pain, whiplash, low back pain, sciatica, disc herniation, scoliosis, shoulder/arm pain, fibromyalgia, knee pain, foot/toe pain, wrist/hand/finger pain, flexibility limitations, rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, TMJ dysfunction, sprains and strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip pain, Sacro-Iliac joint dysfunction, sports injuries, nerve entrapment, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, concussion management, shin splints, golfers elbow, bursitis, postural pain/stiffness and others. Chiropractic care can also help alleviate pain associated with pregnancy. Common pediatric ailments may also be helped with Chiropractic care and include postural issues, abnormal gait patterns, alignment issues during growth, breastfeeding latching issues due to lack of neck rotation and delayed milestones. If you do not respond positively to Chiropractic within a period of time, our doctors are trained to recognize this and refer you to an appropriate medical professional.

It is important to recognize that Chiropractors can NOT treat cancer, organ disease, systemic disease, viruses/bacterias, to name a few. However, we have many patients with these conditions who find chiropractic to help alleviate their musculoskeletal aches and pains associated with these conditions. We are highly trained to recognize when conditions are out of our scope and when referrals are required. As previously mentioned, we are one piece of your comprehensive healthcare puzzle.

Licensed Chiropractors in Canada undergo rigorous studies to be experts in their field. First, a bachelor's degree including studies in biology, physiology, physics, chemistry, and anatomy are completed, followed by a four year postgraduate professional Doctor of Chiropractic degree (D.C.).  This includes hundreds of hours of classroom learning and months of clinical experience. Upon graduation, many chiropractors choose to further their studies. For example, Dr. Joe has a Masters in Sports Science, Dr. Clark has continuing education in using shockwave therapy and Dr. Kristine has advanced training and experience in pediatric and pre and postnatal care.

Typically, adjustments are not painful but can be in certain situations when a person presents in acute pain. In these instances, the Chiropractor needs to address the painful area with an adjustment. This may be temporarily painful but, in most circumstances, will result in eventual relief. In some patients there may be minor side effects after treatment that may last for a day or two. These include muscle soreness in the treated areas, headache, and a short term sense of feeling tired.

Evidence based care refers to the practitioner's use of clinical treatments rooted in most recent evidence based research.  Our practice is based on science and our goal is to work collaboratively with our patients and with other professions based on that principal. These professions include Medical doctors, Physiotherapists, licensed Naturopaths, RMT's and others.

An adjustment is a manual, or instrument assisted, mobilization or manipulation of a joint that the Chiropractor has determined is not moving properly, or restricted. The adjustment restores movement to the joint and typically helps reduce pain and improve strength and function of the joint complex as well.

The official term for the cracking sound is a “cavitation” and results from the rapid air/gas release from a fluid filled joint capsule after an adjustment is performed.

Research has shown that “Chiropractic adjustments are safe when they are done by someone trained and licensed to do Chiropractic care.” -Mayo Clinic

Manitoba Health covers 10 dollars for 7 visits per calendar year. If you are a resident of Manitoba with a health card, with this benefit, your initial appointment will be 90 dollars and subsequent 6 visits will be 50 dollars. Once those benefits are used for the year, visits are 60 dollars. Please remember to bring your health card to your first visit as we direct bill Manitoba Health. If you do not have a Manitoba health card, you will pay the full amount (100 dollars for initial visit, 60 dollars for all subsequent visits).

We do not direct bill private insurance providers, however, we are happy to provide documentation that you may submit to your insurance. Many patients have Chiropractic coverage and find the reimbursement process to be seamless. Manitoba Health does cover 10 dollars of your first 7 visits each year with your Manitoba health card.

Chiropractors are highly trained to read X-Ray images and to recognize when to recommend X-rays. We do not have an X-ray machine in our clinic, however, we refer to other clinics in the area who can get you in quickly. Those clinics then send our Chiropractors the imaging results which will be discussed with you in a timely fashion to determine the next steps in your treatment plan.

At your first visit you will complete a health history form which you will discuss with your Chiropractor before any assessment or treatment is performed. The Chiropractor will focus on the parts of the history that relate to your current musculoskeletal complaint. A physical exam will then be performed focusing on the spine and extremities to determine whether chiropractic treatment is right for you. You may also need other exams or tests such as X-rays before treatment can start. If it is determined that you are a candidate for care, the Chiropractor will
perform targeted adjustments, mobilizations and stretches to help address your problem. From start to finish, most initial visits take less than half an hour.  Once your chiropractor knows your history and has determined a treatment plan with you, subsequent visits are shorter.

The time it takes to improve varies between patients and involves several factors including the severity of the condition, how long it has been going on, past injuries to the area, the patient's age and if there are any concurrent conditions that may affect healing.

Shockwave therapy is a relatively new technology that was first developed medically as "Focused" shockwave therapy for the purpose of breaking up kidney stones (lithotripsy).  This technology has been adapted for musculoskeletal use as "Radial" shockwave therapy for application on adhesions and calcifications of tendons, ligaments, and muscle. Common conditions treated with Radial shockwave therapy are:
- plantar fasciitis/heels spurs
-achilles tendinopathy
-shoulder (rotator cuff) tendinitis
-lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)
-basal joint arthritis of thumb
-patellar tendinitis (jumper's knee)
-as well as variety of other chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as bursitis, shin splints, etc.

As outlined by the Manitoba Chiropractic Association (manitobachiropractors.ca), chiropractors specialize in diagnosing conditions that affect the spine. Through targeted, hands-on spinal adjustments, they help relieve pain, restore movement, and reduce the risk of recurring injury. These adjustments are a drug-free, non-invasive treatment designed to improve alignment and mobility in the spine, supporting optimal function of the nervous system.

Many conditions are linked to dysfunction within the spine and nervous system, and in these cases, chiropractic care offers an effective, conservative approach. Chiropractors also assess and treat all joints, muscles, and nerves—focusing on identifying and addressing the root cause of pain and dysfunction, not just managing symptoms.

Chiropractic care has been shown to help manage a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to: headaches, migraines, neck pain, whiplash, low back pain, sciatica, disc herniation, scoliosis, shoulder and arm pain, fibromyalgia, knee pain, foot and toe pain, wrist, hand, and finger pain, limited flexibility, rotator cuff injuries, arthritis, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, sprains and strains, carpal tunnel syndrome, hip pain, sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction, sports injuries, nerve entrapments, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, concussion-related symptoms, shin splints, golfer’s elbow, bursitis, and postural pain or stiffness. Chiropractic care may also help alleviate discomfort associated with pregnancy.

In addition, chiropractic care may benefit certain pediatric concerns, including postural issues, abnormal gait patterns, alignment changes during growth, breastfeeding challenges related to limited neck rotation, and delayed developmental milestones.

If a patient does not respond positively to chiropractic care within an appropriate time frame, or if a condition would be more appropriately managed by another healthcare professional, our doctors are trained to recognize this and will facilitate referral to ensure the patient receives the most appropriate care.

It is important to recognize that chiropractors do not treat conditions such as cancer, organ disease, systemic illness, or infections caused by viruses or bacteria, among others. However, many patients with these conditions find chiropractic care helpful in alleviating associated musculoskeletal pain and discomfort.

Chiropractors are highly trained to recognize when a condition falls outside their scope of practice and when referral to another healthcare provider is appropriate. As part of a collaborative, patient-centered approach, chiropractic care represents one component of a comprehensive healthcare plan.

Licensed chiropractors in Canada undergo rigorous academic and clinical training to develop expertise in their field. This process typically begins with the completion of a bachelor’s degree, including foundational studies in biology, physiology, physics, chemistry, and anatomy, followed by a four-year postgraduate Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree. This education includes extensive classroom instruction as well as significant hands-on clinical experience.

Following graduation, many chiropractors pursue additional education and training to further enhance their skills. For example, Dr. Joe holds a Master’s degree in Sports Science, Dr. Clark has completed continuing education in shockwave therapy, and Dr. Kristine has advanced training and experience in pediatric, prenatal and postnatal care.

Chiropractic adjustments are generally well tolerated and are not typically painful. However, some temporary discomfort may be experienced, particularly when a patient presents with acute pain or inflammation. In these situations, treatment of the affected area may be sensitive, but in most cases leads to meaningful relief as recovery progresses.

Following treatment, some patients may experience mild, short-term side effects that typically resolve within one to two days. These may include muscle soreness in the treated areas, a mild headache, or a temporary sense of fatigue. These responses are common and often reflect the body’s natural adaptation to treatment.

As with all care provided at our clinic, treatment is individualized and delivered with a focus on patient comfort, safety, and clinical effectiveness.

Evidence-based care means integrating the most current, high-quality research with clinical expertise to guide treatment decisions. At our clinic, care is grounded in science and delivered with a strong commitment to safety, effectiveness, and patient-centered outcomes.

We prioritize a collaborative approach to healthcare, working closely with our patients and coordinating with other regulated health professionals when appropriate. These may include medical doctors, physiotherapists, registered massage therapists (RMTs), licensed naturopaths, and others—ensuring each patient receives well-rounded, comprehensive care tailored to their needs.

An adjustment is a manual (hands-on) or instrument-assisted technique used to improve movement in a joint that has been identified as restricted or not functioning optimally. By restoring proper motion to the joint, adjustments can help reduce pain and improve overall mobility, strength, and function.

Most patients experience adjustments as a quick, controlled movement that may be accompanied by a small “click” or “pop,” which is simply the release of gas within the joint. While some areas may feel tender—especially if they are already irritated—adjustments are generally well tolerated and often provide a sense of relief and improved ease of movement shortly afterward.

The “cracking” or “popping” sound sometimes heard during an adjustment is called a cavitation. It occurs when gas is rapidly released from within the fluid-filled joint capsule as the joint is gently moved. This is a normal and harmless part of the adjustment process.

Research supports that chiropractic adjustments are safe when performed by a properly trained and licensed chiropractor. As noted by the Mayo Clinic, “Chiropractic adjustments are safe when they are done by someone trained and licensed to do chiropractic care.”

Manitoba Health provides partial coverage of $10 per visit for up to 7 visits per calendar year for patients with a valid Manitoba Health card.

Chiropractors are trained to interpret X-ray imaging and to determine when imaging is clinically appropriate. While we do not have on-site X-ray services at our clinic, we can refer you to trusted local facilities that are able to accommodate patients promptly.

Once imaging is completed, results are sent directly to our clinic and reviewed by your chiropractor. We will then discuss the findings with you in a timely manner and outline appropriate next steps in your care plan.

At your first visit, you’ll be asked to complete a health history form, which your chiropractor will review and discuss with you before any assessment or treatment begins. This helps us understand your concerns and what’s been going on, so we can tailor care to your specific needs.

A physical examination will then be performed, typically focusing on the spine and surrounding joints, to determine whether chiropractic care is the right fit for you. In some cases, additional testing or imaging, such as X-rays, may be recommended before starting treatment.

If chiropractic care is appropriate, your chiropractor will begin treatment using targeted adjustments, mobilizations, and stretches designed to help address your concerns and get you moving more comfortably.

Most initial visits take less than 30 minutes. Once we’ve gotten to know your history and established a treatment plan together, follow-up visits are usually shorter and more focused.

The time it takes to see improvement varies from patient to patient and depends on several factors, including the severity of the condition, how long symptoms have been present, any previous injuries to the area, the patient’s age, and the presence of other health conditions that may influence healing.

Some patients notice improvement within the first few visits, while others may require a longer course of care. Your chiropractor will discuss expectations with you and work collaboratively to develop a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and progress.
